Comfort Crop Duster
27/03/09
EgofreakyThis week I present you with possibly my most universally liked drink. So universally liked, in fact, that there are a few bars in Melbourne that use the recipe (although unlike a certain one in Elsternwick, they’re polite enough to credit me for it, and not pretend like one of their own staff members came up with the recipe).
Frankly, I’m aware that Southern Comfort is much maligned in the general drinking community. It’s two distinct flavours: Bourbon and Peach. Some people don’t seem to think they work well together. Others just ended up drinking an entire bottle, spending the rest of the night throwing up and pissing all over a friends bathroom.
Personally, I think it works rather nicely, provided you give it a little extra something.
GLASS: Tumbler, Highball for a long one. You can also use a Tulip glass for presentation like I did.
INGREDIENTS:
- Cinnamon stick
- 45ml Southern Comfort
- 5ml vanilla liqueur
- Dry cola (I think RC does nicely, Coke at a pinch, avoid Pepsi)
METHOD: Build.
What you want to do here is actually place the ice in the glass first, so you can prop the cinnamon at an angle. Gently pour the vanilla liqueur through it followed by a slow dribble of Southern Comfort. Pour both through the shaft of the cinnamon so that it picks up flavour along the way, then let it sit for about a minute soaking some more. Top the rest of the drink off with Cola, garnish how you like.
A cannot strongly enough point out that this is a drink that lime does not go with. Don’t put in lime juice. Don’t garnish with a lime wedge or wheel. Maybe some curled lime peels. I’m not sure how the zest goes as I haven’t tried it. The citrus fruit it does work with is blood oranges, and to a lesser extent, regular oranges.
