So it seems that Circa Nocturna is on again.

What’s intereting to note is that in 2010, the stuff that’s no doubt been plastered all over your Facebook’s right hand side seems to be the new range of labels that are appearing. I’m sure by now, you’re sick to death of seeing that Berserk Clothing advert on the ad panel. I’ve clicked through to it in the past to check it out. It’s mostly Tshirts and a few skirts… And it’s mostly the kind of stuff you’d expect to find in Dangerfield.

I know there’s a market for it, but I really don’t get how or why it’s being included in a fashion show like CN. For the most part, it’s always been club and evening wear. The sorts of outfits that you’d wear to impress people for sheer vanity. Not street wear. Now, this may be coming across a little hypocrtical, considering that I am for the most part what I like to call “K-Mart Goth” (plain black Tshirt, black jeans, some black shoes… Hey, $75 later and I look fine if not exceedingly plain, and I still have money to spend on my drug habit), but I just feel like this is further proof that the fashion and imagery behind goth culture is being further co-opted into the mainstream.

What’s more, I like to fantasize that perhaps under those really long, draping velvet and lace bolts of cloth, there’s perhaps 16 layers of petticoats. With the street wear stuff, people usually end up getting jeans so tight you get camel toe… Which is made even worse by the fact that on some people, camel toe turns into moose knuckle.

Why yes, I AM interested in higher wattage light bulbs... VERY interested... Oh, and fashion!

"Why yes, I AM interested in higher wattage light bulbs... VERY interested..."

Whilst the fashions at CN are no less outlandish than those on regular catwalks, they actually are things that people can wear out onto the street without looking weird in a ‘socially unacceptable’ manner, they are for the most part not entirely impractical as actual items of clothing either.

On a sadder note, a number of designers that in the past have actually had the kind of clothing you dream about wearing (after seeing it show up in some fantasy flick or another) appear to be absent this year. Most notably is Dragon’s Blood, from Adelaide. This is made even worse by the fact that my lastr trip there, I found out that the store was gone.

The flip side to this is that there appear to be a substantially longer list of designers going on this year, including a few I’ve never heard of before. At least Lyris is still going strong with that kind of wear, and my all time favourite (because there’s something I love about fascist chic), PurPur.

And enough with my complaining, because I know I’m still going to go… blatant hypocrit what I am. But if anyone asks, I’m only there to support Dave Callahan. His career really needs it… or something O_o
