A Nifty History of Evil
07/04/10

If you go to SupaNova at all, you’re probably familiar with John Robertson. He’s a Perth based comedian that does a lot of nerdcentric comedy. He’s also a tad on the gawth side. And it’s with no small pleasure that he’s at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival this year… Which basically makes for two goth comedians, and half a dozen nerdcentric shows.
A Nifty History of Evil is a fun romp through John’s facial expressions, mans inhumanity to man, movie villians, and a puppet show about the Marquis DeSade… Which is in no way related to the store Marquis And DeSade, located in North Road, Ormond… Even if John happened to spend the entire show wearing a black PVC corset.
As someone that MCs events, and even used to do standup comedy an age ago (shameful, harrowing personal story… I’ll probably be going into it in another post this week), I’m somewhat critical of one person comedy shows. They’re often trite, self-indulgent bits of pointless fluff that, whilst amusing, do not in anyway enrich your own life unless you’re a devotee of the Schadenfreud lifestyle… Which a lot of you probably are, considering that this is a blog that caters to goths.
But I digress. My point was that this was actually mildly educational, and quite definitely amusing. I’m well read, and I was still enlighted with a new nugget of gawth information. Specifically, the types of vampires that are native to the Phillipines. Apparently the Manananggal is more useful than a falcon punch.
So if you’re after an evil little laugh (unless you’re that annoying guy that thought he was a pirate and kept laughing like that on purpose… That shit is even more annoying than saying “LOL” instead of actually laughing!), I recommend heading along to Tony Star’s Kitten Club, getting yourself a nice cocktail, and letting John amuse you for an hour before he goes back to Perth.
