Oh, the Humanity
21/01/11
EgofreakySometimes you sit back and watch a horror movie because it’s better than the complete lack of plans you made for the weekend.
Horror movies come in two over-arching types: Really god woefully bad and you wish you could pluck your own eyes out while speaking Latin like that dude in Scene 18 or are a part of the Gingerdead Man franchise, or the actually good ones that have a decent budget and genuinely prey on your mind after leaving the cinema (and are usually ripped off of Asian movies).
The thing about the good horror movies is that even though you know they simply cannot happen, they continue to prey on your mind afterward. “What if my world isn’t the real one…” and “There’s stuff out there I don’t understand…” It’s why poorly shot movies about axe wielding psychopathic bums dressed as Santa Claus don’t particularly scare us. Things that could actually happen are kind of tacky.
But sometimes that shit actually does happen…
Things like those hospital scenes you see in Hellraiser or Jacob’s Ladder. Or an abortionist clinic that doesn’t bother spending money on, y’know, cleaning staff… or for that matter, qualified staff. And leaving the aborted fetuses (fetii???) literally hanging around in bottles. And not using actual surgical equipment, but rather scissors for accidental live births. And only performing abortions for immigrants, minority groups and the poor.
Apparently he’s been doing this for 30 years, and people are now comparing him to the Nazis. Which I think leads to a few silly comparisons. For a start, you’ve instantly proven you’ve lost the argument by invoking Godwin’s Law, and by extension, you are going to lose every argument you are about to have regarding abortion regardless of which side you happen to be on. There’s also the fact that Nazis were, well, nazis, when it came to the use of qualified medical personnel for their gruesome experiments. Degrees from respected Cherman universities were a must!
Either way, the guy is clearly attempting to bring fruit from some sort of eugenics based agenda here. Which is why I’m writing today. I have to go out on a limb here and so that I’m pro-eugenics, although not the “culling a minority” kind espoused by Galton when he came up with the idea of it.
We’ve actually been performing eugenic breeding for centuries to get desirable traits in livestock and pets. Every breed of dog that is not a wolf, coyote, hyena or xoloitzcuintle, is from a selective breeding process to get desirable traits such as aggression, size, or flappy skin so you can pull at their faces and go “D’awwwww!”. Every time you bite into your delicious Angus steaks, you’re eating the product of selective breeding of bovines for producing more muscle mass with fewer stressor hormones.
I’m for the kind of eugenics that recommends that people should be genetically sequenced and notified of what traits they’re statistically likely to pass on to the child, and then have a fertilized egg modified to remove as many of the negative traits as possible. We should all be so lucky as to be born with a predisposition to being healthy, attractive and intelligent, and through modern science that is actually currently available it’s possible – yet considered unethical.
But getting back to Doctor Death here. After all, he’s the kind of guy that does subscribe to Galton’s idea of eugenics as being a way to rid us of the poor, or immigrants. Because those things are totally based on a genetic predisposition, right?
You know what the best part about the whole story is? The doctor’s name is “Kermit Gosnell”.
Surely I cannot be the only person that read that and instantly had this spring to mind.
Yes, this entire rant was specifically so I could make fun of his name and post a fetus picture.
…
I’m bored today…
